This is my definition of American: having US Citizenship. That's it, no cultural bullshit. Just having citizenship is enough to qualify you as American in my mind. Americans by nature are diverse and don't have an overall culture that everyone should abide by. We're a melting pot for a fucking reason.

My race is the human race.

I could see where pointing out physical traits (complexion, facial features, hair) might be necessary for say, identifying a missing person or a criminal (or anyone, really), but that's really the extent of my use for it.  When you start using labels like black, white, African American, Native American, Asian, European, Hispanic, that's where things get needlessly convoluted and troublesome.  What are we referring to here?  Race?  Nationality?  Skin color?  Culture?  And why are some terms, such as Asian, exclusive to more specific areas or people if they cover entire continents?  This is complicated enough without bringing racism and politics into it.

I can also see where certain folks might identify with certain specific cultures and want to label themselves as such, but even that's subject to debate and interpretation.  I, personally, see myself as American, plain and simple, which means I'm a US citizen who's been exposed to many different cultures.  As for my ethnicity, that's more conversation fodder than anything.  It's not essential.

This word's reputation comes from its connotation, not its literal meaning.  ("Bitch," on the other hand, is infamous for its literal meaning.)  That's not to say it's right or that it has any logic to it.  Here's my take on its usage:  If I know it'll cause a ruckus, I won't use it.  I could argue all I want on the semantics of the word, its history, or even ways to change its meaning or reputation, but that doesn't necessarily change the majority's opinion of it.  That's not to say the majority's opinion of it will never change, and I think opening up and talking about it helps, whether you strongly oppose its usage, strongly defend it, or just don't care.
